Activities & Local Area
The Woodland Hut is full of information about local wildlife: maybe you will see the Barn Owl swooping by or the Badgers whose setts
take up one edge of the wood. Campers can sometimes help bottle feed calves or see new chicks. The llamas Quentin and Herbert like
to see what you are up to and Raisin the dog is a favourite with children. Willow weaving workshops to make your own birdfeeder are
available and an archaeological dig is currently in progress. Willow workshops to make your own birdfeeder are available.
Finds from an archaeological dig on the farm can be seen in the barn.
We provide maps of walks around the farm or further afield: Tiger Hill Wood is close by where you can paddle in the Assington Brook.
Arger Fen Nature Reserve provides longer walks, or perhaps you will want to visit Chapel Barn and see the famous Bures Dragon.
Cycling is also popular in the area, as is canoing on the River Stour. We have several adult bikes which for a small deposit campers are
welcome to borrow. Canoes and cycles can also be hired from Sudbury www.outdoorhirecentres.com
The campsite is situated half way between the villages of Bures St Mary and Assington. The latter village has a pub, farm shop, cafe and
garden centre. Bures holds a market on its ancient common once a month and hearty meals are available at the Eight Bells pub. A few
miles away are the picturesque and historic small towns of Long Melford, Clare and Lavenham where you can browse antique shops,
visit stately homes or sample a cream tea.
The bustling market town of Sudbury is 5 miles away: the market is held every week on Thursdays and Saturdays.
The town is also the birthplace of the artist Thomas Gainsborough and his house is an art gallery.
About 7 miles in the other direction lies the historic town of Colchester with its Norman castle, Castle Park and Roman remains.
A trip to the 'Sunshine coast' of Frinton, Walton or Clacton takes about 45 minutes.
